I purchased this iron for it's portability, as an aircraft mechanic, I'm out on the ramp quite a bit, with no place to plug in a soldering iron, or anything else for that matter. The PSI100K works rather nice, it can be turned off, set down for a few minutes while you get the next wire ready, switch it back on and it reignites, without hitting the piezo, plus it's come in handy for concentrating heat on frozen key locks.

The PSI100K is truly the big brother to the Weller P2KC which I have happily used for some years. Both work well and are reliable, and both do a good job of containing the butane charge while not in use. The larger PSI100K is more than worth the extra $20 if only for the fold-out wire stand, just to have an easy option to set the unit aside without starting an unintended fire. The extra BTUs are also handy both for larger solding jobs with lots of metal to heat, and esp. for using the hot knife attachment for cutting plastics, trimming rope, etc. For just a quick one-junction solder, these butane units also heat up faster than my conventional AC powered irons.

I have owned my Portasol Iron for 15 years now and i have used it quite regularly, it is my preferred iron for quick jobs or field repairs. the iron heats fast and puts out good heat i have no trouble soldering Lugs on 10Ga wire (although slow have even done 6Ga). The unit also has nice one handed controls Just Turn gas on with your thumb, click the ignitor a few times and 15 seconds or so youre soldering, but shut it off when youre done and just reignite for the next terminal. if you lay it on the bench for a few seconds between soldering jobs it will overheat and damage the plating on the tip. My iron survived a few years in alaska kicking around in a tool bag. The temp (Gas Flow) adjuster also works good, the unit has a exhaust port on the side of the tip that used to annoy me because it would burn whatever you were working next to, I just make sure i am aware of where its pointing and have found it works great for shrink wrap heating from the exhaust so you dont have to change tips. My Butane tank just froze (i guess it froze as another butane item failed the same day for the same reason) and broke but after the use and abuse it has suffered i guess i cant complain much. i hope the replacement lasts me as long.
